5 CATALAN POLITICIANS JAILED IN SPAIN ELIGIBLE TO ENTER PARLIAMENT

Serhat TUNAR -DG- In Sunday's (yesterday) general election in Spain, 5 imprisoned Catalan parliamentary candidates advocating Catalonia's secession from Spain were eligible to enter parliament.

The trials of jailed Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Sanchez, Jordi Trull, Josep Rull and Raul Romeva are ongoing in Spain's Supreme Court.

Oriol Junqueras, a former Vice-President of the Northeast region who was eligible to enter parliament in elections, was one of the people who, along with Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, launched the initiative for Catalonia's secession from Spain in 2017.

Josep Rull was a member of the Regional Government of Catalonia. Jord November May 2015 and November 2017, Jordi Sanchez was the president of the Catalan National Assembly, and Jordi Trull was the spokesperson for the Government of Catalonia. Raul Romeva, on the other hand, was conducting diplomatic relations related to Catalonia's independence.

In preparation for the election, actions in Catalonia had occupied an important part of the agenda. Two years ago, Catalonia's nine politicians were given prison sentences ranging from 9 to 13 years for carrying out separatist politics and holding a referendum on secession from Spain despite being declared illegal.

In October 19 and October 26, activists from five different cities in Catalonia, the region's capital Barcelona, had blocked the roads for the actions, which were widely attended.

Catalonia's nine politicians have been given prison sentences ranging from 9-13 years for carrying out separatist politics two years ago and organizing a referendum on secession from Spain despite being declared illegal.
