Aslıhan DOĞRU -TDO- In Romania, 10 newborns were reportedly infected with coronavirus (Covid-19) at the Timisoara maternity unit in the west of the country.
In the incident, mothers were told that prenatal coronavirus tests were negative.
“The mothers tested negative, but the babies tested positive so we have to consider their contacts with medical staff,” Health Minister Nelu Tataru said in an interview.
However, tests performed after birth in infants revealed that the virus was found. For this reason, it was decided that mothers and babies would be re-tested.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, but believe the disease was transmitted to babies by hospital staff.
The babies have no symptoms and all but one of them, together with their mothers, have gone into self-isolation at home.
According to the latest data in Romania, there are 4,417 people caught in coronavirus.
182 people died in the country due to the virus, while 460 people recovered and discharged.
