İlknur Şebnem Öztemel – TDO – It has been declared that new U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 30-day suspension of the entry of immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. However, several federal judges are against the decision and thousands of people have started street demonstrations all over the country. Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, said Canada welcomes refugees who have been rejected from US.  He added that he intends to talk with President Trump about the success of the refugee and immigration policy in Canada.  Also, he uploaded an image of him greeting a Syrian child at Toronto Airport to his social media profile and wrote “To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada’’ on Twitter.

In an interview with Canadian ambassador to Turkey, Chris Cooter, said as a secure country, Canada has always been a limelight of immigrants. He added ‘’ initially I have to indicate that we welcome all immigrants that want to come to Canada’’, in same words with Trudeau. Unfortunately, right after Trudeau’s inspiring speech on refugees, a gunman attacked to a mosque in Québec, six people died and several injured. Police said it was a terrorist action.

It cannot be denied that Canada is better treated against refugees, especially Syrians, than many other Western states. Canadian government has started accepting Syrian refugees to the country in December 2015, two months later Aylan Kurdi, a three years old boy drawn in the Aegean Sea while he was going to the home of his aunt in Canada, illegally.  Canadian government accepted Kurdi family and many others to its territory. Nevertheless, there are still disjunctive violent acts against immigrants, particularly Muslims, in the country.
