Mustafa AY – DG – 09.11.2018 On Thursday, Yemeni President Abed Rabbou Mansour Hadi proclaimed that he replaced Mahmoud al-Subaihi -former Defence Minister and Chief of Staff- with Mohammed al-Maqdashi as the new defence minister, but not as chief of staff. As well as assigning Maqdashi, Hadi brough Abdollah al-Nakhii to the empty position of chief of staff.
Al-Subaihi has been detained since 2014, when Shia Houthis rose in an irreversible insurrection in capital city Sana’a with aim of toppling deceased President Ali Abdullah Saleh. However, Oman’s president has recently arbitrated over the issue of conditional release of al-Subaihi between Yemeni government and Houthis. Despite ongoing negotiations for the release of al-Subaihi, Yemeni government endorsed by Saudi-led Arab Coalition is executing an offensive campaign to reclaim the port of al-Hudeidah from Houthis for a long while. So, this might jeopardize the negotiations that Oman is striving for.
