VICTORY DAY PARADE IN RUSSIA

İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-10.05.2017  9th of May is celebrated as the Victory Day in Russia.  Today, is the 72th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War, given against the Nazi Germany.

Actually, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia signed a non-aggression pact in 1939.  However, following the Soviet occupation of Baltic states, Bessarabia and northern Bukovina in June 1940. This made Nazi bureaucrats nervous about Romanian oil resources which they were dependent on.  As a consequence, Hitler re-focused on his passion to end Soviet regime and have more influence in Caucasus. In June 1941, a postponed date due to the necessity to invade Greece and Yugoslavia, Operation Barbarossa launched to get Moscow. The operation named to honor Holly Roman emperor Frederick Barbarossa who tried to establish German predominance in Europe.

Despite of its very ambitious name, operation was failed mainly because of the geographic advantage of the Red Army. History repeated itself and Hitler fell into the same trick as Napoleon and lost his giant empire.

There are also other claims about the failure in the Nazi strategy. Some experts argue that Hitler changed his plans to invade Turkey as he was afraid of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who was one the military genius of the 20th century and Turkish Army which has won legendary victories against the most powerful states of the time. Additionally, it is not a secret that Hitler has deep respect for him and the military capability of Turks. There is even a saying of him as ‘’ If World would be occurred of a state, engineers of it would be Germans and generals of it would be Turks’’ This is alleged to be the reason why Hitler rotated his army to cold plots of Russia.

Till 1965, Victory day has not been celebrated as a national holiday. Starting from 1995, a military parade has been conducted for the day.

Today, hundreds of people including Russian President Putin and Prime Minister Medvedev joined the ceremony, happened in the famous Red Square.
