UN’S NORWEGIAN DIPLOMAT CONSIDERED WORTHY TO THE POSITION OF NEW SYRIA ENVOY

Mustafa AY – TDO – 02.11.2018 Antonio Guterres – UN’ General Secretary – appointed Norwegian Diplomat Geir Pedersen as the UN’s special envoy for Syria. Previously, Geir Pedersen had undertaken Norway’s ambassador to China and various diplomatic positions in UN.

Pedersen’s predecessor Staffan de Mistura has recently announced his resignation from the mission for family reasons. For more than 4 years, he executed the office so as to bring an end to Syrian conflict/civil war. Within the last year, he devoted most of his efforts to draft a new constitution for Syria. For this reason, he approached to the civil war’s parties so that their voices would be reflected in the form of legal words that protect their rights. However, Syria’s Assad Regime expectedly rejected Mistura’s proposition. Therefore, his efforts for drafting new constitution for Syria currently remained undone.
