UN MIGRATION AGENCY’S CONCERN ABOUT FORCED MIGRATION IN LIBYA

Mustafa AY – TDO – 15.08.2018 On Tuesday, UN Migration Agency (UNHCR) expressed its concerns about unfortunate issue of forced migration happened in Libya’s capital Tripoli. UNHCR Spokesman William Spindler stated that Libyan militias displaced 370 families –originally coming from Libya’s Tawergha- from Triq al-Matar Migration Camp. Besides displacement, Libyan militias took 100 of 1900 under arrest. Some 12 migrants’ health conditions are not so good, he added.

Spokesman Spindler underlined the imminent threat posed by Libyan militias. He said that people, who found shelter in migration camps in Libya’s capital, would likely face with the same treatment as in Triq al-Matar. Tawergha was transformed into a ghost town after NATO’s bombing campaign and civil war in 2011. Because of inconvenient settlement conditions in Tawergha, many locals were obliged to migrate.
