TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER’S ASSERTION OF COOPERATION WITH USA

Mustafa AY – TDO – 04.08.2018 On Friday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu made an official assertion concerning talks with his US counterpart Mike Pompeo in Singapore. Çavuşoğlu told the reporters that Turkey is trying to settle the dispute over Pastor Brunson, who is convicted of espionage and terrorism, with USA. This week, US Congress take retaliatory action against USA by imposing sanctions on top Turkish officials. Capitol Hill’s retaliatory sanctions of confiscation of assets of Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu and Justice Minister Abdulhamid Gul will be implemented if US President Donald Trump signs it.

In addition to tension over Pastor Brunson, Minister Cavusoglu conveyed its concerns over PKK-linked YPG/PYD terrorist organization in Syria’s Idlib and Manbij to his US counterpart during talks. Turkey repeatedly stresses the fact that YPG/YPG poses imminent threat to Turkish border security-in other words national security-. Turkish and US forces have been executing joint patrol mission in Manbij, but Turkey is not satisfied with this since the mission does not thoroughly eliminate threat of PYD/YPG terrorist organization. For the reason of eliminating the threat, Turkey put pressure over USA in order to purge both Manbij and Idlib. However, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hasn’t done what Turkey is pressuring for. Instead of YPG/PYD withdraw from Syrian cities, Secretary Pompeo put alternative solutions for the issue of Manbij and Idlib on the negotiation table.
