TURKEY, US AND THE BORDER SECURITY FORCE IN SYRIA

Şimal Çınar –TDO- After US announced that it will back a border protection force for Kurds in Northern Syria, Turkey gave an enraged reaction. The Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said “We will take our own measures. Regardless of who backs them, whether it is the U.S. or other countries, it doesn’t matter to us.” The Minister suggested that a Turkish operation to eradicate Kurdish militants may extend from Afrin to east of the Euphrates. Turkey also made a demand from US to clarify which side they are on.

The security force that is mainly made up of YPG fighters is considered as a terrorist army by Turkey since YPG is thought to be linked to the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), which is deemed to be a terrorist organization both by Turkey and US. Turkey thinks that is has the right of self-defense against terrorist groups according to statement from a spokesman to the President, Ibrahim Kalin and thus he said “Turkey will continue to take all necessary precautions aligned with its national interest to preserve its national security”
