TURKEY’S FORMER AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN SERMET ATACANLI MADE MEMBER OF JAPANESE ORDER

News Centre – TDO- Japan's Ambassador to Turkey Akio Miyajima has hosted a reception at the embassy residence to present the Gold and Silver Star of the Order of the Rising Sun to Turkey's former Ambassador to Japan Sermet Atacanlı for his contributions to strengthening ties between the two countries.

The reception was attended by Turkey’s tenth President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and his spouse Semra Sezer, ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic missions in Ankara and other guests.

Ambassador Miyajima read out the sealed letter from the Emperor of Japan accepting Atacanlı to the Order of the Rising Sun and presented him with the Gold and Silver Star.

Speaking at the ceremony, Miyajima thanked Atacanlı for his contributions to Japanese-Turkish ties.

Emphasising the importance of the friendship between the two countries, Miyajima said, “Although they are separated by a distance of 9,000 kilometres, Japan and Turkey are truly two states with a single heart."

In his speech, Sermet Atacanlı said that the bestowment of the order was a great source of pride and honour and added that Turkey and Japan are two friendly countries.

He said that relations between the two countries had been established after the visit of the Ottoman frigate Ertuğrul to Japan and the subsequent disaster and that bilateral ties had only improved since.

Ambassador Atacanlı thanked the Japanese government for the bestowment and Ambassador Miyajima for his contributions.
