TRUMP’S UNILATERAL DECLARATION REJECTED BY UN RESOLUTION

Hassam Hameed-TDO-23.12.2017- Despite threats of cutting down aides by US, UN passed a defying resolution which calls for US to withdraw its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. 128 states approved the resolution whereas 9 states voted against the resolution. US considers this result to be disrespectful and will remember it.

There were 9 states who abstained from voting which included Canada and 21 countries who did not turn up for the vote. States who voted for the resolution included permanent members of security council along with allies from muslim states. This motion was put forward by Turkey and Yemen on behalf of muslim states which mentioned "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem". Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized that result of votes show the ‘illegality’ of Trump administration decision, and has advised to withdraw it.

"The United States will remember this day, on which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation," US ambassador to UN Nikki Haley said. As UN resolutions are not binding, US still can move its embassy to Jerusalem. Also analysts say that Trump’s threat to cut aides did made countries think twice over their vote. "While the resolution passed, the vote breakdown tells a different story," said a spokesperson for the US mission, as 65 countries in one form or the other did not vote against US.

Polls conducted by University of Maryland in November 63% of Americans as well as 44% of Republicans are against the suggested move of US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Among democrats numbers have increased to 77% from 69% that US should not take sides in the conflict. And interestingly 81% of Americans believe that middle east diplomacy should be handled by experts rather than his son-in-law.
