Robert Harneis –TDO- (FRANCE)- The White House said on Thursday that Trump had invited Putin to visit Washington this autumn. This despite frantic criticism accusing him of “high crimes and misdemeanors” and “treason” at the Helsinki summit. Putin has indicated that he will probably accept the invitation. It is a daring rebuttal to a torrent of criticism from the political class over the press conference after the Helsinki summit this week. Trump’s great ‘crime‘ is to have suggested that the US intelligence services were politically motivated and in short not telling the truth over Russiagate and Russian election meddling. He was forced to say that he used a mistake of language…
There is every sign that he knows exactly what he is doing and not the blundering dullard his critics claim. They tend to forget that he won the presidency against all odds and defeated all the experienced candidates. He has counter attacked saying his critics would prefer war with Russia than him following his policy of “getting along with Putin”. He is using the blaze of publicity to highlight the differences he has with the political class in Washington that are determined there shall be no change in Washington’s aggressive policy against Russia.
It seems that his strategy is paying off as the November mid-term elections approach. A CBS poll has revealed that nearly 70% of Republicans approve of his handling of Helsinki summit.
83 percent of Democrats disapproved of Trump's handling of the summit – and only 8 percent approved but it is Republicans that can re-elect him in two years’ time and give the Republican party a better majority in November, not Democrats.
There was also a sharp party split over the issue of Russian meddling in American elections. Almost nine in 10 Democrats said they believed U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, while only about half of Republicans accepted that conclusion.
