Very soon the various external actors involved in the Syrian crisis will meet at Geneva. Behind the scenes they are now haggling over which of the Syrian ‘opposition’ groups should be represented. Another consideration is that on the ground, the Syrian military backed by Russian air is steadily putting the armed groups out of business. This puts Syria and Russia in the box seat ahead of the start of negotiations, not position that will be welcome to the US and its European and Middle Eastern regional allies. Through postponement or delay or by dragging their feet once the negotiations they will be seeking to rectify the imbalance.
