The Ebola virus, which caused the death of 284 people in the DRC (then Zaire) and Sudan when it first appeared thirty eight years ago is back. The epidemic which began in West Africa in March has spread by land from Guinea to its neighbours Liberia and Sierra Leone and to Senegal and Nigeria by air. Ebola, which gets its name from a river in the region of its origin, has had its greatest effect since its appearance and despite not being observed between 1980 and 1993.
