Şimal Çınar –TDO- After the two Koreas met to discuss North Korea sending a performance art group to the Winter Olympics which will start in February in South Korea, last week they held their first formal dialogue after more than two years. Now, North Korea is calling for further meetings to be held on Wednesday on the South Korean side of the demilitarised zone to discuss its participation in the Olympics. The unification ministry of South Korea stated that it had yet to be decided but according to a ministry official, Seoul is expected to accept the offer.
Up until now, two North Korean athletes have been qualified to compete in the Olympics but the National Olympic Committee of the country did not meet the deadline to accept their spot. However the International Olympic Commitee is discussing about granting an additional quota for them.
Last week during the high-level talks, South Korea proposed that the athletes of both Koreas march jointly at the opening ceremony. It is also reported that South Korea makes an effort to form a united women’s ice hockey team with the North. If this could be achieved, it is predicted that this will be a milestone in the bilateral relationship of the countries.
