Ilknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-The United States carried out more than 20 precision strikes in Abyan, Al Bayda and Shabwah, in Yemen, targeting al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The Pentagon said the strikes targeted al Qaeda militants, heavy weapons systems, equipment, infrastructure and the group's fighting positions.
American Navy Captain Jeff Davis said "The strikes will degrade the AQAP's( Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula) ability to coordinate external terror attacks and limit their ability to use territory seized from the legitimate government of Yemen as a safe space for terror plotting ". It has been alleged that nine terrorists was killed in the attacks.
It has been considered that AQAP has taken advantage of the ongoing civil war between Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi Arabia-backed government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi who tries to widen its control and field of influence over the country. Also, it has been asserted that AQAP boasts one of the world's most feared bomb makers, Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri.It has been a persistent concern ofthe U.S. government ever since an attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day, in 2009. According to the U.N. 10,000 people were killed as a result of several clashes and USA has been ‘’forced’’ to scale back its presence in Yemen.
