Mustafa AY – TDO – 04.06.2018 On Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Rwandan counterpart Louise Mushikiwabo. After the official meeting, Rwandan Minister made remarks suggesting that they discussed about Russian air defense systems. Rwanda may conduct essential negotiations with Russia for the supply of air defense systems in the future if Russia comes up with a good dead.
Russia is the main supplier of Rwanda. Rwandan Army, to which Rwandan government allocates roughly 100 million dollars for defense budget, has been equipped with Russian arms such as main battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers and land vehicles. In addition to the land forces, Rwandan Air Forces also full of Russian aerial units like Mi-8/17 and Mi-24 helicopters. Since Russia is the main supplier of Rwanda, Moscow provides technical support to Rwanda because of Rwandan air forces’ technical insufficiencies in the field of aviation. During the press conference, Lavrov stated that they also talked about the peaceful use of nuclear energy. In this field, both countries have smoothly working collaboration, said Lavrov.
