RUSSIAN SENATORS’ STATEMENT ON US DECISION ON SANCTIONS AGAINST TURKEY

Selin ATAY-TDO- Speaking on the US sanctions resolution against Turkey, Russian senator Vladimir Cabarov said the sanctions would do Ankara no harm and were only intended to calm public opinion in the US.

"The sanctions will not pose a real threat to Turkey, they will not cause any harm to the country. The purpose of these sanctions is just to calm public opinion in the United States, nothing more,” he said.

Trump also has to’ play in this game', Cabarov said, explaining the reason as not wanting to appear to be betraying the interests of the Kurds, whom the US has’ nurtured for years'.

“Russia will not gain in any way from sanctions, " Cabarov said. In light of what happened, it was said that Ankara would increase cooperation in the military field. We are not countries that profit from sanctions imposed on another country. We are extremely honest with our partners,” he said.

Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, the upper wing of the Russian parliament, said the US sanctions against Turkey confirmed that such behavior was a tool of domestic policy, not foreign.

"The sanction imposed by the US Finance Ministry on three ministers and two ministries from Turkey confirmed something many in the world had predicted. Sanctions are a tool of U.S. foreign policy, not domestic policy. They do not serve the originally set goals, but in one way or another, Trump resolves his problems with his political rivals,” the statement said.

“It is a separate issue that the sanctions will not affect the behavior of Ankara, which does not want to be very isolated, as much as the attitude of most of Turkey's NATO allies,” Kosachev said.

Commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin's stance on the issue, Kosachev said: “and this attitude is not only aimed at Turkey's actions: Syria's territory must be purged from foreign powers, Syria's territorial integrity must be fully ensured.”
