ROMANIA GOES TO REFERENDUM FOR DEFINING STATUTORY STATUS OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN THE CONSTITUTION

Mustafa AY – TDO – 07.10.2018 Romania administers a referendum to define statutory status of the same-sex marriage in the constitution at this weekend. Romanian parliament legislated for homosexuality in 2001. Throughout two-day long referendum, the validity of referendum necessitates a turnout of 30 percent.

Before the referendum, Liviu Dragnea -the leader of Romania’s leading Social Democrat Party- specified the fact that many of Romanian citizens have some serious concerns about legitimacy of the same-sex marriage. Currently, the opponents of referendum call on Romanians to take action against it as they claim that ‘yes’ votes will lead rights of minorities to be ignored and even infringed.
