PROHIBITION ON THE USE OF CLUSTER BOMB POST POSTPONED INDEFINITELY, PENTAGON SAID

Mustafa AY – TDO – 01.12.2017 Pentagon officials uttered that they will lift the prohibition on the use of cluster bombs after Jan. 1, 2019. Cluster bombs was legally forbidden on account of the fact that some parts of the munitions’ fire mechanism did not explode and accordingly caused to proliferate the civilian deaths in warzones who mistakenly trigger the unexploded bombs. Since US Army could not reportedly identify the locations of which the bombs fell in warzones, they could not get rid of the bombs risking the civilian’s lives. Pentagon tried to fix the fire-mechanism and to improve safety for cluster bombs, which that 99% bombs in a cluster bombs explode is meant. However, they failed to enhance the bomb.

After this announcement, Senator Patrick, who devoted his utmost efforts to illegalize the use of cluster bombs, said “Pentagon will indiscriminately and consciously perpetuate the failed bombs that have serious level of risk for civilian lives”.  As well as this critical, Mary Wareham -arms division director at Human Rights Watch- condemned USA’s lift of ban over cluster bombs. With the exact letters, “we condemn this decision to reverse the long-held US dedication not to use cluster munitions that fail more than 1 percent today resulting in civilian’s lives” said Wareham.
