Mustafa AY – TDO – 04.07.2018 President of Poland Andrzej Duda made an official remark suggesting that President of Supreme Court –Malgırzata Gersdorf- is expected to announce her retirement from the position on July 4. In response to President’s words, spokesman of Supreme Court released a statement, “Mrs. Gersdorf has no intention for retirment for now. As usual, she will be on her duty tomorrow.” Majority of Polish Parliament has been reportedly compelling some of judges of Supreme Court including in Mrs. Gersdorf to retirement. However, Supreme Court has successfully withstood against the pressure of parliament.
On 20th of December, 2017, Poland made a constitutional reform to surge President’s control over Supreme Court. Following the reform, EU Court of Justice and Parliament issued a memorandum to reverse Warsaw’s decision. But, Polish administration along with the majority of parliament stressed that no step-back would be exhibited. In addition to EU’s pressure, many Polish citizens marched on the streets to show their will against reform. On this time when Preisdent Duda made words of ‘retirement’ for Mrs. Gersdorf, approximately 4000 Polish citizens staged a demonstration against Duda’s retirment statements.
