Mustafa AY – TDO – 18.08.2018 On Friday, Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that they will not permit Venezuelan immigrants to cross the border unless they possess passports. Following Peru, Ecuadorian Interior Minister Mauro Toscanini made the same announcement with Peru. He uttered that Ecuador will implement the similar rules such as passport requirment and passport checks for not only Venezuelans, but also other neighboring countries’ citizens. Prior to their announcements, Peru and Ecuador allowed neighboring countries’ citizens to cross the border with a national ID card.
After OPEC decided on decreasing Petrol’s barrel price from 100 dollars to 45-50 dollars in 2015, Venezuelan government confronted with current account and budget deficit at large proportions, which afterwards triggered rise in unemployment and inflation. So, Venezuela is going through the process of economic recession which makes Venezuelans’ access to basic needs like food, medicine and others impossible. Therefore, over 1 million Venezuelans needed to immigrate to neighboring countries like Colombia, Brazilia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru.
