Serhat TUNAR -TDO- As tensions rise between Iran and the United States, Pentagon may send more troops to the Middle East so as to ‘enhance force protection’. Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan confirmed this claim. However, he also stated that the claims about the United States’ sending 5,000 to 10,000 troops were not true. In recent weeks, the United States made a clear statement to Iran supporting its forces in the Middle East. The United States strengthen its presence in the region with an aircraft carrier strike group, Patriot missiles, B-52 bombers and F-15 fighters.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that Iran has no intention to get into war with the United States, however, given the amid tension, will resist the United States on the matter.
US- Iran tensions started last year when the United States withdrew from the international nuclear deal and re-imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic. In response to this, on 8 May, Iran decided to discontinue some of its obligations under the nuclear agreement.
