PALESTINIAN CONFLICT: RISING HOPES ABOUT A NEW MEETING IN COOPERATION WITH RUSSIA AND USA

İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- 16.06.2017- Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal asserted that Israel tried to lead the peace process with Palestine into a "dark tunnel" and told Sputnik that a new conference led by US and Russia may be helpful.

Nofal said, "Anyone who follows the political situation in the Middle East could have noticed that Israel seeks to lead this process into a dark tunnel". He also underlined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent calls to "disband" the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and Israeli lawmakers votes to deduct money transfers to the Palestinian Authority this week.

He offered to have a new series of talks between sides under the co-presidency of USA and Russia. He stated, "We believe that an international conference under the partnership efforts of Moscow and Washington is needed to solve this.”. He pointed that Moscow could be a good location for the meeting.

Additionally, he gave very interesting information about the Palestinian state. He mentioned that they’re working on a project to supply Russian instead of Israeli oil and petrochemical products to Palestine. He noted that certain agreements have been reached during Mahmoud Abbas' visit to Russia on May 11.

Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most long-standing problems in international politics. There have been various attempts by diverse mediators that organized to settle about seven decades-long conflict.
