OFFICIAL NAME AGREEMENT BETWEEN MACEDONIA AND GREECE ENCOUNTERED PUBLIC OBSTACLE IN REFERENDUM

Mustafa AY – TDO – 02.10.2018 In order to remedy 3-decade-long official name conflict between Greece and Macedonia, Macedonia’s Zaev Government compulsorily called referendum. According to the initial official results, 34,09 percent of Macedonian constituents attended to the referendum. Since the referendum necessitates participation of salt majority (50,1%) for validity of the name agreement, over 50,1% Macedonian citizens appeared in the referendum and voted in favour of the name deal. If the agreement results in failure in coming days, Macedonia’s membership to EU and NATO will be subject to ‘veto’ of Greece.
