Hassam Hameed-TDO-20.01.2018- Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, has announced her pregnancy this Friday. She will continue at the office, taking only 6 week break after conceiving. Ms Ardern discovered it only 6 days before learned that she will be the new Prime Minister.
“I’ll be prime minister and a mum, and Clarke will be ‘first man of fishing’ and stay at home dad. I think it’s fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn’t be more excited.” she said in a Facebook post. Deputy Prime Minister, Winston Peter, will take over during her 6-week break, "As is the case when I am overseas, Mr Peters will act as prime minister, working with my office while staying in touch with me", reported by New Zealand Herald.
This would not be the first time that an elected female leader conceives a child during her tenure. Late Benazir Bhutto in 1990 gave birth to a daughter while serving as Prime Minister of Pakistan.
She rejected lead-up questions of sexism as “unacceptable”, stating that conceiving a child and child rearing should not affect opportunities for females in workplace.
