MACEDONIAN GOVERNMENT SUBMITTED DRAFT CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT FOR RENAMING THE COUNTRY

Mustafa AY – TDO – 05.11.2018 Macedonia’s Zaev Government has just submitted the draft constitutional amendment for renaming the country to the parliament. PM Zoran Zaev specified that the expected legal process in the parliament would take a month. If the process culminated in success, Greece will lift its veto on Macedonia’s accession to both NATO and EU as promised.

At the last September, Macedonia went to referendum for renaming the country. Even if the low turnout (below threshold) was observed, 94% of voters in the referendum said ‘yes’ to the agreement. Following the announcement of official results, Athens, NATO and EU expressed their happiness to the choice of Macedonian society. Let them aside, Kremlin showed a very different reaction to the referendum. Kremlin underlined the invalidity of referendum by pointing out the low turnout as a rationale.
