Mustafa AY – TDO – 10.11.2018 On Friday, Macedonian Parliament extended state of emergency, which the government issued and implemented at its southern and northern borders for averting frontier breaches by illegal immigrants, till June 2019. Macedonia has recently collaborated with Greece and Serbia in order to maintain its border security because of insufficient resources to fight against influx of immigrants.
In the first half of 2018, Macedonia confronted with recorded 6,600 frontier infringement. However, it’s not the main concern that Macedonian government has in mind. What really worries Macedonia is unrecorded border breaches. Since Macedonia confronted with insufficient resources to prevent immigrant’s flow, the government had to sign a cooperation-oriented agreement with EU’s External Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) for securing its borders. With this agreement, Frontex border guards, which were made up of different EU nations, were deployed at Macedonia’s southern and northern borders to thwart illegal border crossings by immigrants.
