İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-09.06.2017- Kuwait became the mediator between ‘’the old Mediator of the region’’ and the Gulf States that cut off their diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar regarding its alleged support to terrorism.
Kuwait’s Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah flew to Doha in the previous night and met with Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The Qatari foreign ministry stated that the two talked about to “restore the normal relations” of the Gulf.
By the way, Donald Trump tacitly proposed to become a dealer between sides. He suggested Qatari emir to discuss the crisis. He even requested to host negotiations in the White House. Officers said that “President offered to help the parties resolve their differences, including through a meeting at the White House if necessary”.
It is reported that, later, Trump had a phone call with UAE’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan, called for unity among Gulf Arabs but ‘’never at the expense of eliminating funding for radical extremism or defeating terrorism”.
Qatar was the old mediator in the region as it was the place of strategic meetings between American officers and different militant groups such as Hamas and Taliban. Moreover, it had an indispensable position in the Gulf as it was in favor to have balanced relations with Iran.
Whatever it is, Qatar has a very significant geopolitical location, it is the largest exporter of liquid gas and hosts the largest US military base in the region. Also, Qatar is supposed to be the home of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
