Şimal Çınar –TDO- Oliver Ivanovic, a 64-year-old politician was assassinated upon a drive-by shooting on Tuesday morning in front of his Citizens' Initiative Party offices by unknown assailants. He was a key politician in Serb-dominated northern Kosovo, a former Serbian province where the high tension still remains after the ethnic Albanian Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February 2008.

In 2016, Ivanovic was convicted by the EU judges and was sentenced to nine years for war crimes he allegedly committed during the 1998-1999 wars, which took place between Serbian security forces and Kosovo Albanian guerrillas. However, in February 2017 the decision was overturned and appeals court ordered a retrial.

As the Serbian state television reported, President Aleksandar Vucic has called a top security meeting after the incident. The concern is the attack might add up to the tension in Kosovo.
