Mustafa AY – TDO – 17.10.2018 On Monday, Amman administration announced that they will reopen its main border gate ‘Jaber’ with Syria. Jordan was coerced to seal Jaber border gate in 2015 because Syrian Assad Regime Forces lost the control of Nassib border gate to Syrian opposition forces. Before emergence of civil war in Syria, Jaber-Nassib border gates played a significant role in making revenue for both Syria and Jordan because the border gates are in the middle of a strategically important trade route linking Eurasia up with Middle East/Arabian Peninsula.
In July 2018, Assad Regime troops regained the grip of Nassib border gate after Moscow brokered a ceasefire between opposing parties. Taking the control of Nassib backk brought the issue of reopening Jaber-Nassib border gates up automatically. Because Jordan sought for a legitimate rule in the control of border gate. Once Assad Regime completed deployment of its border troops to secure Nassib border gate, both countries commenced to negotiate for mutual reopening of borders. Both sides reached a consensus on that Jaber-Nassib will be open to civil and commercial services only from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m.
