İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO- Chinese President Xi Jinping went to Finland. This is his first trip to Finland.
Right after they arrived in Helsinki,Jinping said that China and Finland would increase cooperation under the China-European Union framework.
It has been asserted that leaders debated about U.S. President Donald Trump’s ‘’ America first’’ policy on a trade that compels other states including Finland as Nokia and Swedish truck-car maker Volvo obtrudes to enter foreign markets. Also, they allegedly talked about the sign of free trade agreement between two states, chairmanship of Finland in the Arctic Council and aggression of North Korea.
At the end of the meeting, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Jinping indicated that they would "seize the opportunity of Finland's rotating chairmanship of the Arctic Council to enhance cooperation in Arctic affairs and promote environmental protection and sustainable development of the Arctic ".
Jyrki Kallio, theresearcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, said "China continues to raise its profile as a defender of free trade’’. He added, “Both Finland and China share the same concern about the negative effects on the global economy if Trump's action ignites a trade war between China and the United States ".
In recent months, Jinping visited several states to increase economic cooperation and enhanced China’s profile as a supporter of free trade while the main inventor of it the USA and western European states started to be protectionist. His speech in Davos Economic Forum, which Donald Trump skippedattending, is the most significant proof of it.
Xi is due to meet U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida later this week.
