ITALIAN NATIONAL DAY 2018




News Centre – TDO – A reception was held at the residence of the embassy of Italy in Ankara by Italy’s Ambassador to Turkey Luigi Mattiolo and his spouse Stefania Mattiolo on the occasion of Republic Day, which is celebrated every year to mark Italy’s transformation from a monarchy to a republic on June 2nd 1946.

Minister for the Economy Nihat Zeybekçi was the guest of honour at the reception, which was also attended by the Second Chief of Staff General Ümit Dündar.

At the ceremony, which began with the singing of the national anthems of the two countries, Ambassador Mattiolo said:

“Our countries face problems which no country alone can solve.  The wave of migration, combating terrorism, the need to increase economic growth and social development are some of these problems. The need to alleviate these problems has pushed us to strengthen our cooperation in every field.”

Mattio pointed out that Turkey and Italy have common interests in fields such as stability in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, ending terrorism, the European Union adjustment process and energy security and added that the number of Italian firms active in Turkey had been increasing and this served common interests.

Ambassador Mattio said that Turkish investment in Italy was also rising and added "We need a clean beginning, a new vision and a common future. It is time for us to focus on our shared interests.”

Ambassador Mattion ended his speech thanking his listeners in Turkish and Minister Zeybekçi responded to the gesture by beginning his speech in Italian.

Zeybekçi said “Today I will be awarded a decoration. I will take this important decoration as a reflection of the close economic ties between Turkey and Italy. As a reflection of the cooperation and the will to take it further, I present my gratitude to the Italian government and ambassador.”

Minister Nihat Zeybekçi, celebrated Italy’s National Day on behalf of Turkey and the people of Turkey.

At the reception, in addition to Minister Zeybekçi, Italian state decorations of various ranks were awarded to Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin, Eskişehir Mayor Yılmaz Büyükerşen, President’s Office Chief Press Consultant Lütfullah Göktaş and Musa Toprak, founder of the Italian Friendship Association.
