İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-19.09.2017- According to Japanese newspaper Sekai Nippo, North Korean authorities are secretly working on a nuclear submarine production project which they hope to be operational till 2020. The newspaper based its article on an ‘’informed’’ but unknown source.
Additionally, it is asserted that some Chinese and Russian engineers help North Korean authorities in to build a nuclear submarine which would led an unbelievable leap in the navy of about 50 or 60 diesel-electric submarines.
Although having a nuclear submarine is a very expensive thing compared to regular ones but they are faster, more powerful and have a wider range as they can stay underwater for much longer without needing to resurface and refuel.
Also, they can be strengthened with ballistic missiles and it is easier to fire one in the middle of the sea rather than on the land. Experts argue that this is why Pyongyang wants to have it.
Since 2014, North Korea has test launched their Pukguksong-1 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) at least six times. An operational Pukguksong-1 could be loaded into a nuclear submarine, which could be used to maneuver in international waters and fire a missile that would be nearly impossible to stop or shut down.
Recently, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un argued that their nuclear program would continue until their nuclear capabilities became equal with USA’s. It seems Kim will do everything to achieve his goal and keep his promise.
