INDIA TEST-FIRED AGNI-5 BALLISTIC MISSILE




Şimal Çınar –TDO- According to the statement of India’s Defence Minister, the country successfully tested its nuclear capable long range intercontinental ballistic missile. Homegrown Agni-5 missile which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead of about 1.5 tonnes was fired on Thursday morning from the coast of the eastern state of Odisha. The missile that travelled for 19 minutes and covered 4,900 km during the test has a strike range of over 5000 kms and is corporated with new technologies in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine.

The Ministry said it will give a major boost to the country’s defense capacity. However the test seems to be added to the tension between India and Pakistan and China. Some said that the test also might be a signal to Beijing.

With Agni-5, India joins the countries with intercontinental ballistic missiles; namely to US, Britain, Russia, China and France.
