IN EXILE ON THEIR OWN LAND: THE STRUGGLE OF THE WESTERN THRACE TURKS

All I knew about the subject, as I left Istanbul on the morning of July 23rd were a few words left in my mind from history lessons and a few lines I had picked up online. When my editor asked me to go to Gümülcine and to report on the demonstration Western Thrace Turks would hold on July 24th, the anniversary of the Treaty of Lausanne, I felt excited to be reporting from abroad for the first time. On my way back I carried with me the memories of people who made me feel at home and the sorrow of leaving these sincere people behind. The joy of what I had experienced and the information I gained about the Western Thrace Turkish minority competed with the regret of never having visited before. What you are about to read is a very brief history of people who have been in exile on their own land since the 1900s to the present and that of the unity and uncompromising stance of the Western Thrace Turkish minority.By Mithat Kemal ÝMANmithatiman@gmail.comYou can read the rest of the article on our issue of September
