News Centre – TDO – The Next Level Hip-Hop Programme being run by the University of North Carolina and Meridian International to increase inter-cultural interaction through hip-hop will be held in Ankara in October with support from the US Embassy.
As part of the programme, four New York-based hip-hop artists, Melanie Aguirre, Lance Johnson, DJ Kevie-Kev Rockwell and iLLspokinn will hold free workshops, performances and surprise activities over two weeks.
The American artists have begun to come together with young Turkish performers at events held at CerModern to share their knowledge and experiences in MC, disk jockeying, graffiti and hip-hop. The American team will continue its activities in Ankara until October 21st and will hold a closing performance with all the participants of the project and supporting Turkish performers. The concert, which will be held at CerModern on October 20th at 16.00 will bring together hip-hop fans from Ankara.
The profiles of the New York-based artists who are in Ankara as part of the programme are as follows:
Melanie Aguirre (Dancer)
Melanie is a dancer from New York and the originator of the Rep Your Style. Known for her social projects in New York, Melanie has organised dancing competitions, forums and aid campaigns. She offers training in many different dance styles. Melanie is also consulted by theatres for their performances. She was one of the performers selected by the La Place Center Cultural Hip-Hop programme in 2017.
Lance Johnson (Graffiti Artist)
Lance is a graffiti artist from New York. He mostly works on visual applications to urban redevelopment areas. Lance is also an art teacher and carries out art projects for socio-economically disadvantaged groups.
Kevin “DJ Kevie-Kev Rockwell” Carson (DJ)
Kevin is a renowned DJ from Harlem. Having made a name for himself in his field since the early 1980s, DJ Kevie Kev has shared the stage with many famous performers. He is also known in the hip-hop scene for the social responsibility projects he carries out. For his work in this field, he was awarded the Senator Richard Blumenthal Award in 2018.
Corey “iLLspokinn” Lima (MC)
Corey is a performer from New York who has become well known as a performance artist, songwriter and national and international projects he has carried out. His pieces have been played in the Winter Olympics and many TV commercials. He is also the co-founder of the Urban Art Beat group. With the organisation ArtBy, Corey holds special workshops for the elderly every week, in which rap and rhythm come together. Under the stage name iLLspokinn, he is also the founder and producer of the Freestyle Mondays live hip-hop group that performs in New York weekly.
