İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-DG- Guatemala's army detained a boat of non-profit Women on Waves organization, carrying abortion pills and prevented it from picking up women seeking to end their pregnancies.
Guatemalan officers said that abortion is against the constitution, written in the law as ‘’ the preservation of human life and the laws in effect in our country ". Guatemala, in where numerous Evangelist and Catholic church exists, abortion could be used as a cure if mother’s life is in danger.
Women on Waves which is a Dutch organization established in 1999, provides free abortion pills of mifepristone and misoprostol to woman up to ten weeks pregnant, living all over the World. They visit various cities, choose women according to their health conditions, bring them into international waters where no laws of any state can be applied, bring them pills and return to coast after a few hours of observation.
According to the organization, 65.000 illegal abortions are performed annually in the Latin American country.
We are in 2017 but abortion is still a very debatable issue as many religions prohibit it. Abortion may be whether a problem or a solution dependent on woman under the pressure of religion, tradition, conscious and realities of modern life. Previously, President Donald Trump, the new leader of the ‘’free’’ world, criticized abortion and condemned by hundreds of women.
