GLORIOUS MARTYR’S DAY OF BANGLADESH AND THE INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY 2018




News Centre-TDO- Yesterday, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Turkey, M. Allama Sıddıki, hosted a celebration ceremony in National Library, regarding Glorious Martyr’s Day of Bangladesh and International Mother Language Day.

The program started with the speeches of Ambassador Sıddıki, and Director of Ankara University, Prof. Dr. A. Merthan Dündar.

The program, continued with Bengali poem performances, concert of Ankara State Classical Turkish Music Choir and performers from several embassies. It was ended with a culinary offer from Bangladesh.

In 1948, the Government of the Dominion of Pakistan defined Urdu as the sole national language in the country. This led extensive protests among the Bengali-speaking majority of East Bengal. The students of the University of Dhaka  organized a protest on 21 February 1952, many youngsters were killed. This sad event provoked widespread civil unrest. After years of conflict, central government granted official status to the Bengali language in 1956. In 1999, UNESCO declared 21 February as International Mother Language Day.
