FRANCE KNOCKED GREEK CYPRIOTS’ DOOR FOR BACKUP FOR EU DEFENCE PACT

Mustafa AY – TDO – 08.09.2018 On Friday, French FM Jean-Yves Le Drian went to Greek Cypriots’ capital Nicosia so as to conduct bilateral talks with his Cypriot counterpart Christodoulides.  Le Drian underlined the importance of incorporation of Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cypriot (GCASC) into EU Defence Pact by uttering that Greek Cypriot plays an considerable role for EU’s military strategy in Eastern Mediterranean. In face of France’s bids to build EU’s defence up, GCASC will take essential steps for collaboration on the matter that President Macron’s recently stayed on, said Greek Cypriot FM Chirstodoulides.

On account of US President Donald Trump’s humiliating remarks “we’ll make EU pay for the cost of defence”, French President Emanuel Macron literally lost his confidence in Washington’s alliance. Macron accelerated the process of formation of EU Defence Pact since he constantly reiterated the fact that EU should control its own destiny by adopting the principle of self-sufficiency on matter of defence. On 28th of August, President Macron paid an official visit to his Danish counterpart so as to ask PM Rasmussen’s endorsement for the Pact. During his official visit, French leader underscored the gravity of Danish presence in EU’s Defence.
