FRANCE’ CALL ON UN SECURITY COUNCIL TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION AGAINST LIBYAN MILITIAS

Mustafa AY – TDO – 26.09.2018 French President Emanuel Macron called on UN Security Council to take immediate action to impose heavy sanctions on Libyan militias. As known, President Macron hosted long-lasting reconciliation talks between Libyan rival political groups to administer general elections by the end of 2018. However, since the beginning of 2018, the clashes between Libyan militias - Seventh Brigade/Kaniyat, Tripoli Revolutionary Brigades and Nawasi Brigades - left 115 dead and 383 wounded. So, France and UN’s labours to help Libyan political groups arrange general elections has seemingly been failed because of those militias. That’s why, as well as Macron, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves le Drian underlined the necessity of sanctions to cease ongoing conflict in the country with this statement “France will not allow Libyan opposition fractions to maintain the status quo, which they benefitted from.”
