ERITREA’S FIRST DIPLOMATIC STEPS TO ETHIOPIA AFTER PEACE AGREEMENT IN JUNE

Mustafa AY – TDO – 22.07.2018 Following the peace treaty signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia, Eritrea has just taken the first diplomatic steps towards Ethiopia. Eritrean Enformation Minister Yemane Meskel asserted that Eritrean administration appointed its first envoy to Ethiopia after two decade-long conflict. Eritrean Education Minister Semere Russom has been found suitable to the position, added Minister Meskel to his words. Prior to the duty in ministerial office, Semere Russom undertook the diplomatic mission as envoy to United States.

Eritrea is dedicated to reinforce the newly-fixed diplomatic ties with Ethiopia by taking the first objective steps. Following serious border conflict amidst Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1998, both countries declared war against each other. The major war lasted till 2000 and left tens of thousands of soldiers dead. Even if major war ended in 2000, border violations and small-scale clashes persisted till 2016.
