DURING THEIR MEETING IN FRANCE AT THE INVITATION OF MACRON KHALIFA HAFER AND FAYEZ AL-SARRAJ ARE HOLDING A CEASEFIRE AND HOLDING ELECTIONS SOON

By Adel Tayari –TDO- (TUNUSIA) The head of the Libyan national reconciliation government, Fayez Sarraj, and his rival the leader of the parliamentary forces, retired Major General Khalifa Hafer, committed to a ceasefire and organize presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, according to a draft statement published Tuesday (July 25th) by the French presidency.

French officials confirmed that the 10-point draft, seen by Agence France-Presse, said only a political solution could solve the crisis in Libya and support the Skhirat agreement, which was agreed in 2015 with the support of the United Nations to serve as a basis for the political process in Libya. For reference, these points are the subject of each meeting between Khalifa Hafter and Fayez Al-Sarraj , however, the May meetings in Abu Dhabi between Khalifa Hafater and Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the meetings they had with Egyptian officials before and after the UAE meetings, were unable to find solutions to the differences between the two men.

It is still not known whether this meeting in Paris falls within the framework of what some sources are talking about a new plan to be announced by the new UN envoy, Ghassan Salama, soon for the Libyan crisis, which will be presented to the UN Security Council, to replace the agreement signed by the former envoy Bernardino León, or just meetings of recent attempts to convince the parties to a solution that does not require a new UN Security Council resolution.
