DONALD TRUMP DECIDED TO EXPAND MILITARY INTERVENTION IN AFGHANISTAN




İrem Uzun –TDO- President Donald Trump has said his original instance was to withdraw the forces, however he instead decided to fight in order to end 16-years conflict.‘We are not nation building again. We are killing terrorists” he said.

The Afghanistan question has been on the agenda of White House for a long time. On Sunday, administration officials said President Trump has settled on a new strategy on Afghanistan. It was politically significant in order to show the difference of his approach from Obama’s, which he criticised a lot.

US President also emphasised that Afghan government should be more responsible to fight against Taliban, he promised to work with the Afghan government as a quid pro quo for the maintenance of commitment and progress. A response from the Taliban side was threatening, it was implied that Afghanistan would become another graveyard for the US unless they withdrew its troops.

Pakistan also has a critical point on Afghan Strategy. Trump administration officials have been trying to persuade Pakistan to shut down the sanctuaries for the Taliban. Trump repeated and warned Pakistan not to provide safe havens for extreme groups, he said the country should side with US.

Lastly, the president implied they would also intensify their fight against al-Qaeda and so-called Islamic State. “They need to know they have nowhere to hide - that no place is beyond the reach of American arms,” he said.
