İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-17.05.2017 According to Washington Post, two American officers alleged that US President, Donald Trump, disclosed secret information to Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, about a planned Islamic State operation. This led another crisis in the USA about Trump’s credibility.
Last week a meeting was conducted between Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak. It has been claimed that chief American officers shared highly classified data with Russians who are his ‘’ally’’ in the fight against Deash.
After the so-called ‘’scandal’’, the White House, immediately rejectedaccusations. Also, Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, said the focus of the meeting was counterterrorism and National Security Adviser Dina Powell called the story ‘’false’’.
Additionally, Trump’s national security adviser H.R. McMaster made a statement. He told reporters as "The story that came out tonight as reported is false”. He added that the leaders reviewed a range of common threats including to civil aviation. He said “At no time were intelligence sources or methods discussed. The president did not disclose any military operations that were not already publicly known...I was in the room. It didn't happen".
Nevertheless, all these “official’’ efforts did not satisfy other politicians. The Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Dick Durbin, called Trump's conduct "dangerous" and "reckless". Moreover, Bob Corker, the Republican head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called government "very, very troubling" if it is true.
Regarding the intelligence sharing agreement, President has the authority to disclose even the most highly classified information at will. As to, Trump tweeted "As President, I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety, Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism".However, in this case, he did so without consulting the ally that provided it, which threatens to jeopardize a long-standing intelligence-sharing agreement.
Finally, it is significant to remind that respecting the Gallup Survey reports, Trump’s approval rating has fallen one more point since Sunday.
Starting from his campaign period, Donald Trump was named as the most pro-Russian actor in state politics. Even, some agents counted that Russian hackers intervened the presidential elections to change results in favor of Trump. Besides, recently he fired the head of FBI and the chief of the investigation about Russian interference in American politics, James Comey. At that time, The White House stated that Trump decided to fire him with reference to ‘’advises’’ of JeffSessions whois the Secretary of State and his assistant Rod Rosenstein.
