Serhat TUNAR -TDO- The Turkish side presented a new proposal to the Greek Cypriot side to establish a joint committee on the use of hydrocarbon resources off the island of Cyprus.
Turkey announced their support to the proposal submitted by Mustafa Akinci, Turkish Cypriot leader to Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades through the United Nations Special Representative of Cyprus.
In a written statement from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs it is stated that TRNC President Mustafa Akinci’s proposal for a new comprehensive cooperation prepared by the Turkish Cypriot side for the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources around Cyprus Island was welcomed and fully supported.
Mustafa Akinci's new proposal includes the establishment of a committee to be formed by an equal number of Turkish and Greek members under the supervision of the UN and that the European Union takes part in the committee as an observer. The proposal also includes the simultaneous use of hydrocarbon resources and revenue sharing.
