İlknur Şebnem Öztemel-TDO-21.10.2017- Chinese authorities became very agnry aboıut South Korean government’s decision to deploy American technology of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in order to combat North Korean aggression and argued to freeze cultural relations with Seoul.
Following the announcements about THAAD, Chinese officlas claimed that would not led any progress to achieve stability in the region and even worsen it. Also, shows of popular South Korean soap operas was prohibited, concerts of K-Pop singers were cancelled in China and the number of Chinese people that visit South Korea drastically dropped.
Actually, Chinese bureaucrats are really busy with the 19th National Congress of Chinese Communist Party but during a free-time, asked about recent developments, deputy media regulator Zhnag Hongsen said this sanctions would not contain ‘’ordinary exchange of goods’’. He stated “Cultural exchanges relate to where the popular will inclines and to emotional choices’’. He added “So what we say is that culture exchanges are an exchange of temperatures, and this temperature comes from popular feeling and emotion” without elaborating.
The man problem about THAAD for Beijing is the attached radar. Chinese authorities are nervous about the system as it maybe detrimental for their national security due to it’s capability to observe and photograph Chinese territory.
