CATALANS PUT PRESSURE ON MADRID TO RELEASE CATALAN SEPARATIST POLITICIANS AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST

Mustafa AY – TDO – 17.10.2018 Following Catalans’ attempts at seceding from Spain in September 2017, Madrid immediately took action to dissolve the parliament and detained many secessionist politicians and human rights activists, who afterwards faced with sentence of imprisonment. Once 1 year has just elapsed over the referendum, the current Catalan Parliament and President of autonomous Catalan government –Quim Torra- have intensified their pressure on Madrid for release of Catalan politicians and human rights activists. Even if Catalans are determined to maintain their pressures on Madrid to coerce them to release, Spanish government successfully withstands their pressure by refusing their wants.

Besides Catalonia, Amnesty International called on Spanish government for immediate release of two human rights activists - Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart- from jail. Sanchez and Cuixart have been serving their sentence since 16th of October, 2017. They were convicted of the indictments of seduction and insurrection. According to Amnesty International, the charges both to which Catalan activists have been exposed are disproportionate and excessive.
