CATALAN PARLIAMENT PUT OFF THE VOTING FOR THE HEAD OF PARLIAMENT

Mustafa AY – TDO – 31.01.2018 The Catalan Parliament will not administrate a voting that helps determining the new head of Parliament in the near future. As previously known, the Catalan Parliament nominated former head of Parliament Charles Puigdemont. He fled Belgium and has kept himself in exile since Spanish Constitutional Court decreed an arrestment warrant for Puigdemont on account of the charges varying from treason to sedition. Parliament speaker announced the postpone of the voting and underlined the fact that Charles Puigdemont’s candidacy will proceed without encountering any rival in the parliament. At the previous week, Puigdemont’s candidacy was announced by Catalan politicians in legislation. Following this proclaim, Spanish Constitutional Court reminded the procedure of electing a leader to the parliament. According to the procedure, a candidate to the head of Catalan Parliament has to physically exist in the voting. However, since the Court decreed an arrestment warrant against Puigdemont, which was the main reason of Puigdemont to flee Spain, it seems that the voting may high likely not be concluded as the Catalan Parliament has desired for.
