Serhat TUNAR - TDO -The French court sentenced the Lyon Cardinal Philippe Barbarin to serve a six-month suspended prison term for refusing to report sexual harassment to children. Cardinal Barbarine announced that he would submit his resignation to Pope Francis because he was found guilty.
The court ruled that the cardinal had committed a crime because he had ignored the sexual harassment complaints and he had not reported these incidents to the authorities.
The Lyon Cardinal Philippe Barbarin became the highest-level cleric convicted of this crime in the Catholic Church in France.
Francois Devaux, founder of the La Parole Libérée association, considered the conviction as a victory for the protection of children. "This decision can be described as a strong message that the voices of victims of sexual harassment are heard," Devaux said.
